1. They Are Truly Local
Almost 80% of fresh flowers sold in the United States are not grown in North America, but in Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Israel. Shipping flowers from those countries to the United States incurs huge transportation, energy, refrigeration, and storage costs, leaving an enormous carbon footprint. These floral materials may carry residue of chemical pesticides or fungicides.
2. They Are Truly Fresh
Imported flowers are often cut a week or more before they arrive in a consumer's hands. During this time, quality and vase life decline. Locally-grown flowers can be cut in the morning and on your dining room table that evening.
3. They Are Responsibly Grown
At Whitton Farms, we participate in the Certified Naturally Grown program. CNG is managed by participating farmers, and adheres many rigid sustainable farming practices. If we have a pest infestation, we only use pesticides that carry an OMRI label, with that said, we have not sprayed any kind of chemical on our flowers fields in over a decade. Our number one priority at the farm is to grow our soil.
4. They Smell Better
The first year I grew Bells of Ireland, I was shocked by their lovely fragrance. I had used wholesale bells of Ireland for a few years for floral design work before I began farming. I had no idea they could smell so light and fresh. Also the color was much more vivid. Commodity flowers have been bred to fit in a box for long distance travel. Locally grown flowers are produced in greater varieties, providing a wide range of colors, forms, and scents.
5. They Support the Local Economy
The production and sale of locally-grown cut flowers contribute to a community's economy, and provides employment and valuable agriculture experiences to people of all ages and walks of life.
6. They Make You Feel Better
Flowers reduce stress and improve your mood. Flowers can be connected to a time, a place, a person, a season, an event. They have a story to tell and you are a part of it.
